what I'd like to be doing today

I'm motivating to head out side and move cow fence but I'd rather be doing what my dogs are doing today!!

Just got back from hosting a winemaker dinner at a hunting lodge in north central Oregon. A beautiful spot indeed it was part of excursions hosted by Garden and Gun pretty and great to be included. Thank you Highland Hills and Garden and Gun! so now I go from high glamor to slogging around in the lower field ... sigh - is harvest over yet I want my husband back... wahhh - we are almost to the end of harvest - it has been an amazing vintage year and Brian is VERY happy which is great...

Short Days :: Long Days

I know that I said a while back that I was back to blogging again, but then I sort of trickled off ... like I have done a lot lately. This time it wasn't because of a lack of desire to write, but rather because I've just been plain busy. Now that I have more mobility and one semi-working foot to go along with the good one I've been trying to do as much as possible ... although I do things more slowly than before because I'm not near full strength yet.

With that being said there has been a lot accomplished lately. As you can see from the picture above we made it through our second Farm Crawl which meant we spent a lot of time getting the farm prepared for hundreds of people. In fact in the week leading up to the Farm Crawl there was much cleaning done as well as even some fence building. Now we have a hi-tensile wire fence around the yard and for the first time in four years the animals don't have free and easy access to the yard ... on the downside there will be A LOT more mower gas used next year (even if it is another drought).

Of course the Downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market has continued (only one left) and we have begun taking in hogs for our whole and half customers. I'm very thankful for our whole/half customers and will admit that it is a lot of fun (and feels like a huge accomplishment) to take large groups of hogs into the processor all at once. I have another batch going in a couple of weeks and then we'll be down to our sow herd and pigs mostly between birth and 150 pounds ... a little less feed will be used at least for a short while.

And then most recently I was able to go up and help my uncle put the tarp on his 36' x 100' hoop house. His is for storing machinery, but it was nice to seen one in person and the building up close. It makes me want a hoop house for winter farrowing/growers even more than before. So ... I'm researching different brands, checking prices, and trying to figure out just where I could put a hoop house!

I hope everyone is getting much accomplished this fall ...

He always wanted a little brother...

and it took almost 10 years for him to get one...

Now the little brother wants to be a big brother!

I am not sure we can help with this one :)

In the meantime, look how cute they are!
It is archery season in these parts...

a fat pony and a rainbow... OH MY!

This beautiful rainbow fell on our prairie tonight at Maple Valley Farm...  "She" was amazed at God's creation!

Just a Saturday evening at Maple Valley Farms…

We are getting outside as much as we can.

Winter is definitely coming with the teasing of the cold winds… I know

what is behind these pretty colours…

The animals have a look and they whisper to me that they know what is coming…

The wood cook stove stays going 24/7 now and fall meals are in abundance!
Winter squash, homemade chicken noodle soup and cakes are filling my kitty cat's bellies…

The fall color is still amazing this time of year.

I was usually not fan of winter but I do look forward to the rest it

affords on a farm and I now take full advantage of it.  It took my health to appreciate winter and now I do embrace it… FULLY!

Are you in a fall mood?

Do tell me. I love hearing from you! I really do. I have some faithful "
commenters", but why don't you step out tonight and comment for the first time? I would love to hear from you :)

a new family picture for fall! lookey here!

Contrary to some popular belief, this family does have a TON of fun!

This is just one of our new fall photos!  These kids are growing
w a y to fast for this Momma!  I took a slew of photos today of these kitty cats...  I love them s o much!  Do you like our new header of baby girl? :)

I am surely blessed... And at the end of all of my days, if this is all that I have, I have been blessed...

Thank you Jesus!

this fall photo by our oldest daughter

This is a photo of the pond behind the Maple Cottage and its barn at Maple Valley Farm, taken by our oldest daughter.  We are enjoying fall in Michigan, the colors are absolutely breathtaking!

The pond was surely one reason we were drawn to here when deciding to purchase this place over 4 years ago.

Just praying for more rain this fall as it has been drought like...

What is one of your favourite parts of where you live?

Do tell J

gratitude and happiness - once again

There is lots to do today in the office - yesterday was moving the cows and getting caught up in the garden... the list doesn't end - but this morning I am struck by a few things...  it's process and I'm in it (I have company) and it's not about finishing the list it's about living the list.

The second thing I'm sitting here in awe of this morning is - there have been anywhere from 4 - 12 people at the big table for dinner every night since harvest started in earnest just over a week ago. It's people who are 'helping out' - people like Lucy that showed up yesterday for a full day of farm work we got the cows moved, prepped the second batch of tomatoes for caning and did a switcheroo on the bee hives that needed to get done.  Elaine - who showed up to help went into town and for me took care of the grocery list and fetched Jeremy and Katie - who are working side by side with brian at the winery. And sean who just left - who flew up here from berkeley for 5 days to 'just help'  Sean I can't even begin to thank you enough!!

I have no idea how this giving and recieveing thing works but it does and I'm just so damn grateful... It truly feels like a big table and I know thats cheezy but ...  the longer this farm and winemaking project is growing here the more I feel like it has it's own life. I had this wonderful warm feeling last night as those guys came up the driveway and and then they got out of the car and took in groceries changed there clothes came out and joined lucy and I as we finished up ... and katie spontaneously started digging the rest of the potatoes she and brian had started working on .. then we all came in and cooperativily made dinner. It was really beautiful it was the essence of us humans is all our speldor being happy, cooperative, celebratory and openly loving eachother.

I'm pretty much the happiest girl on the planit...  I only hope I can give back one tiny part of what all these incredible people share of them selves -- I will say it again -- Thank you!!

inquiring minds

My washer is home and her new name is zippy   : )

...  This time I dodged a bullet (of the hubs teasing) as it was not the contents of pockets that caused the jam. That being said it easily could have been based on what I pulled out of the trap. sooo I superglued the $90 zipper to the soap dispenser as a 'note to self' to check the pockets! : )

ok back to making wine...

Building a Monopoly Style Monopoly

Lately I've been listening to podcasts while I'm driving to and from the farmers market, doctors appointments, and work. It seems like a slightly more profitable way to use that down time and I can usually find something encouraging to listen to. Most recently I stumbled across a podcast from Seth Godin. I had heard of him before through a variety of sources so I decided to give his new podcast (actually segments from a lecture) a try. So far so good ...

But, what struck me was this quote, "Every successful business has a monopoly ... has a monopoly on what it makes that someone else can't make the way they make it. That leaves out commodity businesses ..." (he also said that he was thankful for commodity businesses because they produce things that we all need) And, I really like this quote, "Brilliant entrepreneurship is around figuring out that thing that you can do that's in the marketplace that people are willing to cross the street to get. That people understand that this is the one and I need it."

The whole episode was interesting, but those were two keys that I took away and really made me think about the farm and marketing for the farm. To be blunt ... my prices are higher than those at the supermarket. Sometimes they are quite a bit higher and other times they are only slightly higher. But, what I realize and what my customers realize is that comparing our woodlot raised heritage breed meats with those that come in a frozen tube in the freezer case or on a styrofoam plate in the cooler aisle is not comparing two equal things. Sure, they are similar in the fact that they are both meat products ... and there are plenty of people that would argue with me saying that there is no difference between the two. But, when it comes down to it I'm not raising and selling a commodity ... I'm working to raise something, "that someone else can't make the way" I make it!

Another important thing to realize that even within my own "community" of farms (other farms doing something similar to mine) I have to offer something that encourages people to "cross the street to get". At the Downtown Des Moines Farmer's Market I'm one of multiple people raising pork, beef, lamb, and poultry products. So, the question I continually ask myself is how do I make the farm stand out? Of course I continually work to offer up great tasting meats, but what else can I do?

A couple of things that I've worked to focus on is building relationships (the market and things like the farm crawl are great for that) and raising rare or heritage breeds. I'd love to hear more thoughts on these topics, and you can be sure that I'll continue listening to the podcasts as long as they are released ...

it's raining grapes

It's been a great couple days as the fruit rolls in. We will be pulling in pretty much our entire production this week! Today we have a tiny respite from getting fruit and there are a 1000 things to get ready in the winery and at home for Thursday and Friday but things seem to be getting done. We've had incredible volunteers to sort fruit and more great folks coming Thursday and Friday. In the winery working along side Brian we have the A-team back from last year plus some - Lester and Katie are back!! Lester for his third harvest with us and Katie her second it's so amazing to have these guys back there energy and spirit truly makes the wine better! We also have our friends Sean and Jeremy coming in for shorter stints to help out.

The fruit is beautiful his year we hardly need to sort it ... but of course we do because that's how we role. There is not a stitch of rot or dessication. It's all perfectly ripe and looks like we will have it all pretty much in by the time the rain the folks are talking about comes in this weekend...

the great thing about this photo is her name really is Lucy! : )

So I'm off to thaw some beef for tomorrows lunch and take care of farm stuff - btw I did load up the washer and took it into town no word yet from the fix-it guy but I'll keep you posted : )
